Game 1 of Week 11 kicked off at St. Mary’s with a battle between the free falling ServiceMaster team and the surging Beattie Dodge. With Captain Rob Fullarton missing his second straight game due to injury, ServiceMaster dropped a hotly contested game 78-52. This was Beattie Dodge’s first win in a couple weeks, but with the resurgence of their captain Mike Ayerst and the return of American import Scott Cruciger, the team looks headed in the right direction. Ayerst led the team with 19 pts and 20 rebounds. Keith Kelsey led the team with 22, Cruciger chipping in 17 and Dan Preston added 11. ServiceMaster was led by Mitch Grange’s 21 pts and a career high 11 rebounds, with Scott Maycock adding 19. ServiceMaster shot a dreadful 4/20 from 3pt range. Not even with the addition of a spare who once played with George Mikan, could they keep up with Beattie’s hot shooting from the field (51%).

The middle game at St. Mary’s featured a highly competitive matchup between Riverside Ford and Ainley Group. Ainley held off the foul prone Forder’s for the 81-71 win. Riverside once again played without Tyler Bennett and fear he may be gone for the season. Tim Oribine kept the MVP hype alive going for 19, 11 and 4 to keep them in the game. Riverside did manage to finish the game despite having 3 of their 6 players foul out. Tom Hoystead reaffirmed himself with 17 points, Dekker adding 12 and Ryan McFadden had 10. For the victors, a well-timed push at the end of the first half helped propel them to an insurmountable lead and their second victory in a row to push closer to .500. Matt Wyllie dominated all aspects of the game, with 24 pts, 9 rebounds and 7 assists. 5 players scored 9 points or more for Ainley, and Brad Speck added his regular 6 assists, to keep his league leading assist total intact.

The finale at St. Mary’s was between Taylor Auto Mall and Eastern Engineering. With Eastern once again missing some key players, they were forced to pick up 2 spares just to get enough to play. T.A.M. was strong from the start picking up their 3rd straight victory, 78-44. Derek “Viking” Taylor brought the A game this week with 22, 13 and 4 assists. Eric Hendriks, Jason Crotty and Jordan Guerts all provided near double-doubles in the win. Eastern was led by Tom Curson’s 11 and Joe David’s 10. Spare Carey Roche tried to be as good as his big sister, and finished with 11.

Over at TISS, the early game saw Boston Pizza continue their mid-season roll by beating Podium Sports Therapy by a score of 58-47. Josh Parson continued his transformation into a responsible teammate by shooting 53% from the field and only taking 4 3pts. This led to a game high 21pts to go with 5 rebounds and 4 assists. His partner in crime, Jamie Clarke…..not so good again. He shot 4/14 from the field but managed to get 11 points in the victory. Martin Osso had a season high 13 for BP. Mark Fournier battled a case of amnesia and finished with 0 fouls to go with his 17 rebounds and 8 points. He’ll remember his role for future games. Podium Sports missed their big man Josh Van Wieren. Dennis Dickson and Taylor Publow each added 14 despite a radically different shooting approach. Dennis chose to shoot 50% from 2 pt range, while Taylor decided to take 14 3pters and make 3.

The final game of the night saw the rematch of the Realtors. Mincom Island City Realty stole the commission back from Rideau Realty with a 73-66 victory. Ray Pengelly and Dave Burns proved why they deserved to be high draft picks with 26-10 and 19-12 respectively. Tyler Andress shot a disappointing 1/7 from behind the arc but still managed to get 12 points. Rideau had to play without Rodney Smith-Merkley and rookie of the year candidate Aaron Doyle. They were led by Kent “Blumpie” Watson’s 14. 5 players in total reached double figures. How Rideau lost a game in which they out rebounded, out assisted, and outshot their opponents remains a mystery that can only be solved by checking the MLS listings in your area.

ServiceMaster first came to Canada in 1953 when Frank Flack partnered with Thane MacNeill to provide carpet maintenance in the Toronto market. Soon Thane became the owner of the distributorship known as ServiceMaster of Toronto, and years later was joined by his son, Duane. In 1967 Gary Franklin joined ServiceMaster as the distributor in the Hamilton area. Gary’s distributorship grew over time to include most of Canada. Additional distributorships were purchased in Atlantic Canada by Gord Loomis, in Manitoba by Frank Jaeger, in Saskatchewan by Cas Pielak, and in British Columbia by Chris Stringer and Greg Leith.

The Management Services Division came to Canada in 1981 focusing on the health care market. Several years later they expanded their services to the education and industrial communities as well.

ServiceMaster International began purchasing back its distributorships in 1997, including ServiceMaster of Canada. By 2001 all of the Canadian distributorships were owned by our parent company, and all the franchise support operations within Canada were merged under the umbrella of ServiceMaster of Canada. Our head office is located in Mississauga, Ontario, and includes training facilities and a warehouse.

Over the years Canada has made several contributions to ServiceMaster operations internationally. A program initially known as Spotlight was launched in 1973 and is the father of modern carpet care maintenance methods. It consisted primarily of the concept of spot cleaning, complemented by less frequent deeper cleaning methods. Additionally, Canada pioneered the sale of franchises by service line. Now the standard at ServiceMaster, Canada was the first to sell one service line per franchise per territory.

In Canada, ServiceMaster is represented by …

ServiceMaster Clean (janitorial services)
ServiceMaster Clean (residential carpet & upholstery cleaning)

It has been brought up a few times over the past few weeks that the captains are having difficulties finding guys that are willing to do the scoring table duties. Every week, each team on the schedule is expected to provide the scorers as scheduled. Makes sense no

Over the course of the year, I’ve set the scoring table schedule to be almost exactly the same for every team. Every team has between 24 and 29 scoring table man games. This is a bunch of 3′s and a few 2′s and a few 1′s spread throughout the schedule. With the two out of town teams not playing any of the early games it was tricky to get the scoring schedule even.

The 2 teams playing the middle games are forced to each score the early and late games. Overall, I think I came up with a fair schedule.

Each player on the team should be volunteering at least 3-4 times per season. I’ve seen the same guys scoring almost every game for some teams. I am trying to be at one gym scoring at least 1 or 2 games other than my own every week. This even reduces the need for guys by 1.

We have been lucky to have a high school student at TISS volunteer his time as well to help out on the clock. He is not being paid to do this and he should not be shit on if he’s doing his best. Have some respect for everyone that helps out in the league, including referees, players, custodians, etc.

I’m hoping this works itself out the rest of the season. Next year, the captains will likely have a team scoring schedule set out so they know who’s scoring each game. I want to thank you all for helping out and making this league a success. Geremiah built this from the scratch and I want it to continue and make it better if possible.

If you haven’t volunteered to score, or if you haven’t been playing lately, you’ll need to get hold of your captain or the league to let them know. We’ve had 2 near defaults and luckily the local junior hockey team had some guys that were willing to come out and play last week. They did alright for hockey players.

If you can’t make it this week, let your captain know ASAP. We’ll try and get spares lined up, even if they are hockey players. If your captain doesn’t check email, you best get on the phone and call him up. Defaults are frowned upon.

We’ll kick things off with a rundown of the first game at St. Mary’s that featured a 73-67 victory by Taylor Auto Mall over Beattie Dodge. The sometimes chippy affair included a comical confrontation between a grumpy old man (Jason Taylor) and his young punk nemesis (Alex Cornelisse). The Taylor boys were irritable throughout the game with the elder Taylor, Derek, throwing the occasional hissy fit about perceived non-calls by game officials. Aside from his teammates’ theatrics, Eric Hendriks had a big night in the win, posting 29 points and 14 rebounds. Surely, Hendriks passed the ball at some point, but no assists were recorded. A solid effort on the glass by Mike Ayerst was not enough to push Beattie Dodge ahead for the W. Ayerst recorded 13 points along with his 20 rebounds and 2 assists. The man that puts the Beattie in Beattie Dodge, Kevin Beattie, contributed 15 points and 6 rebounds on 6-13 shooting as a spare. League veteran, Jason Crotty, celebrated his team’s victory all by his lonesome at Boston Pizza for 2 hours until reinforcements arrived. The beer isn’t going to drink itself guys, so be sure to hit BP after your games for recaps of the night’s action.

The second match-up of the night at St. Mary’s was between two inconsistent teams: Casco and Ainley Group. A HazMat crew needed to be called in prior to the tip-off, due to an overwhelming stench in the gym. It was later determined that the truly indescribable smell originated from Matt Lundvall’s jersey that was apparently the mating bed for an orgy involving several dozen skunks. Ainley Group eked out a 60-58 win on an ugly game-winning bank shot by Matt Wyllie with 17 seconds left in the game. With fouls to give, Ainley Group fouled Casco players for the remainder of the game, killing the clock until a last second shot by Randy Canham fell short of its target. Wyllie’s 21 points, 8 rebounds and 4 assists paced Ainley Group while Brad Speck’s impact was greater than his line of 8 points 5 rebounds and 5 assists might suggest. A determined Colin Jardine fired away from 3-point territory until he made his first of 10 attempts. Kirk Tyo battled throughout the game for Casco, scoring 29 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists. With shots being challenged inside, Casco was forced outside but found little success, shooting 4-23 from behind the arc. Nick Briere had a double-double in the loss, with 12 points, 13 rebounds and 3 assists. Both teams sit at 4-6 heading into Week #10.

Wrapping things up at St. Mary’s, Eastern Engineering dominated a bunch of hockey players that played basketball like…hockey players. Without the ambiguously gay duo of Robbie Fullarton and Warren Lindsay (both injured) and a couple of regulars, only two ServiceMASTER mainstays were available to be paired with Brockville Braves fill-ins. It wasn’t pretty. You know who is pretty? Warren’s girlfriend, Amber, who I had drinks with last night while her boyfriend was in Ottawa at a sausage-fest. She’s delightful! Eastern Engineering dominated the game and won in convincing fashion, 73-44. In the win, Mitch Ferguson shot the tattoos off of his body, firing-up 22 shots, making 10 of them in a 22-point, 9-rebound and 3-assists game. Ferguson’s teammate, Brian Kloosterman, had a game-high 15 rebounds, along with 11 points and 6 rebounds. We won’t dwell on the debacle, but ServiceMASTER is certainly eager for the return of Fullarton from injury.

We almost didn’t have a game between MINCOM Island City Realty and Riverside Ford, as the MINCOM boys straggled into TISS a bit later than planned. Riverside Ford was hot from outside, shooting 16-37. That proved to be the difference as both teams had big nights from a variety of players. For MINCOM, the league’s leading scorer, Ray Pengelly, contributed 31 points, 9 rebounds and 3 assists, while Tyler Andress had 15 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists. The balanced scoring of Riverside Ford paid off as Dave Edwards continued to show that the early season trade that moved him from Ainley Group for Marty MacAllister was a big mistake by Ainley’s management. Edwards netted 25 points, and added 4 rebounds and 2 assists. Timothy Oribine showed why he is an MVP candidate, with 24 points, 8 boards and 7 assists. The win pushed Riverside ahead to 8-2, while the loss dropped MINCOM to a 4-6 record.

Up against the best offense in the league and one of its stingiest defenses, Podium Sports Therapy was in tough in its game with KDL Group. Living up to its reputation and record, KDL Group pounded Podium 90-62. KDL Group, with four players scoring 16-or more points, was led by Kevin Perkins’ night of 29 points, 9 rebounds and 2 assists. Ray Dickman added 18 points, while pulling down 5 rebounds and 2 assists. Carlos Navarro had a double-double with 17 points, 10 rebounds and 1 assist. In the loss, Tim Hatfield had a rare triple-double, 14 points, 10 rebounds and at least a dozen cigarettes. Another bright spot for Podium was the league’s leading rebounding threat, Josh Van Wieren, who had 22 points, 9 rebounds and 5 assists. In a lost and found note, if anyone has seen Paul Bruneau’s game, please return it to him for Week #11. KDL Group stands alone atop the standings with a 9-1 record, while Podium Sports Therapy is in the basement at 2-8.

Where were you when O.J. fled in the white Ford Bronco? Where were you when the Berlin Wall came tumbling down? Where were you when JFK was shot (Scrapes, Ian, Spear and Teddy Butler would surely remember)? In a week that Scott Gomez scored his first goal for the Habs in over a year, Jamie Clarke scored his first 3-point basket since Week #5. And it was a big one! Despite shooting a woeful 2-18, Clarke came up big when he needed to with 14 points and 8 rebounds. As a team Boston Pizza shot a dreadful 18-70 from the field. The only thing worse than their 4-17 totals from 3-point land was Rideau Realty’s 2-17 mark from that territory. Rideau simply choked and Boston Pizza won the game 53-47. Aside from Clarke’s late game 3-point heroics, Boston Pizza benefited from the tandem of Clarke and Josh Parson on the foul line as they went a collective 13-18. That proved to be a big difference in the game. Mark Fournier had his standard outing of 15 rebounds and 5 fouls to help Boston Pizza to the win. Rodney Smith-Merkley had a double-double for Rideau Realty, with 19 points, 12 rebounds and 3 assists.

Stats, standings, Top 10′s, game sheets have all been posted. CJ’s Power Rankings are below. There is no games scheduled for next week at this point. We are reviewing with the local schools and referee association about the Feb. 29th scheduled week off. March 14th is March Break and there is no games scheduled that week.

Feb 22nd at TISS there is a scheduled EOSSAA playoff game right before our time slot. Be ready to go at 6pm or whenever the gym is available. Games at TISS need to try and finish around 930 so short warmups and short halftime breaks are required. No more than 5 and 3 minutes respectively.

Power Rankings: Injuries, poor performances, upsets, near defaults and a hockey team pretending to be a basketball team headlines this weeks rankings.
