Week #7 Game Summaries – On time and on budget!

Rob Fullarton and the ServiceMaster team kept rolling as they defeated Boston Pizza 71-57 in the opening game at St. Mary’s. Boston Pizza could not contain Fullarton who scored 32 points and added 12 rebounds on the night. Mark Fournier reverted back to his old fouling ways as his foul total (5) outnumbered his point total (2). Boston Pizza did manage to hold its own with ServiceMaster on the glass, as the teams each pulled down 38 rebounds on the night. There were many rebounds up for grabs, as the teams were a combined 7-26 from three-point range. 4-22 shooting from the field, Jamie Clarke?! Really? ServiceMaster, now 6-1 on the season, takes on the surging Ainley Group team (3-4) in its next match-up. After what was a solid start to the season, the now struggling Boston Pizza team, heads into Week #8 hoping to improve on its 2-5 record.

In the middle game of the night at St. Mary’s, Riverside Ford outlasted Beattie Dodge 74-67. Scott Cruciger and Dave Dekker competed hard in the paint throughout the game and both had solid nights. Dekker posted 14 points and won the rebounding battle pulling down 12 boards for Riverside Ford. Cruciger led the way for Beattie Dodge with 24 points, 8 rebounds and, in a surprising turn, 0 technical fouls from his nemesis, referee Rob Matheson. Keith Kelsey got his game back on track after early season struggles with a good shooting night, scoring 18 points in the loss. My boy, Danny Preston, found the shooting jinx that had been plaguing Kelsey, as Preston misfired often with a 2-14 outing. Fresh from a recent BMBL Fantasy League trade, Timothy Oribine stepped up for a Riverside Ford team that is missing its biggest offensive threat, Tyler Bennett. Oribine shot for 24 points, while contributing 4 rebounds and 5 assists, much to the dismay of his former Fantasy League Team manager. (Step it up Mitch Grange!)

In its first game since the departure of team Captain, Geremiah Geldart, Taylor Auto Mall could not match the impressive shooting of the now 6-1 KDL Group team, falling 80-54 at St. Mary’s. Like a phoenix rising from the ashes, Ray Dickman found his scoring touch again and arrived at Boston Pizza for post-game drinks with his head rightfully held high for the first time in a long while. On the night, he had a solid line of 15 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and at least 6 glasses of Molson Canadian. Not to be outdone by Dickman’s return to good shooting form was Scott Delaney. Delaney scored 13 points on 5-8 shooting. Kevin Perkins and Jay Peak added 25 and 19 points respectively for KDL Group. In the loss for Taylor Auto Mall, Jason Crotty had a double-double with 11 points and 11 boards. Crotty’s teammate, Derek ‘The Viking’ Taylor, also had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Jordan Geurts was unable to find a good shooting rhythm as he struggled with a 2-15 shooting night, but did pull down a game-high 14 rebounds.

Action kicked off at TISS with a game that neither MINCOM Island City Realty nor Podium Sports Therapy seemed to want to win.  There were turnovers and questionable shot selections aplenty as the game wound down with Podium Sports Therapy coming out ahead with an 81-79 victory. Despite having Dave Burns guard him as if the two were slow dancing all night, Josh Van Weiran scored 22 points and grabbed 19 rebounds, while adding 4 assists for Podium Sports Therapy. Teammate, Dennis Dickson, had a team-high 26 points on a good shooting night from the field. Ray Pengelly had a very strong outing for MINCOM Island City Realty, scoring 32 points and crashing the paint all game long, picking up 13 rebounds. When not playing D as if he were surgically attached to Van Wieran’s hip, Dave Burns poured in 19 points and added 16 boards in the loss. Both teams now have an identical 2-5 record. After challenging a call and shouting an expletive, young Taylor Publow received a technical foul from a game official and subsequently had his mouth washed out with soap by referee, Matt Lundvall. In an awkward and disturbing display, Lundvall attempted to throw Publow over his knee and give him a spanking.

Nick Briere and Kirk Tyo were a dynamic duo in the middle game at TISS on Wednesday night. Casco had a relentless attack that Eastern Engineering simply could not keep pace with. Briere scored 20 points, added 7 assists and was dominant in the rebounding department, pulling down 21 boards. Kirk Tyo had a very solid shooting night, netting 25 points and contributing 7 rebounds and 3 assists. Randy Canham had a double-double for Casco, with a 13 point, 13 rebound night. Brian Kloosterman battled with Briere throughout the game in a great match-up of versatile forwards. Kloosterman scored 19 points and had 10 rebounds. Casco was able to hold off a couple of runs by Eastern Engineering, eventually pulling away for a 71-57 win.  And in poor shooting news…When he’s hot, he’s hot. On this night, he was not. In an epic display of determination, Tom Curson kept firing after starting the first 15 minutes of the game going 0-9 from the floor. He struck gold with shot number ten. Unfortunately, for Eastern Engineering, Curson’s luck did not improve much beyond that point, as he finished the night with a 2-18 performance. Take that, Jamie Clarke!

Rideau Realty shot the ball well in the late game at TISS, but that wasn’t enough to overcome the offensive barrage of an Ainley Group team that scored an impressive 18-26 three-pointers, accounting for 54 of its 79 points. The 79-54 score did not accurately reflect the competitiveness of the game. Rideau Realty came out ahead in rebound totals with a 36-27 advantage and had a strong shooting percentage collectively. Matt Lundvall took his game outside and knocked down 6-6 three-point attempts and a total of 19 points in a great shooting display, along with 7 rebounds. On 5-5 shooting, Brad Speck had 11 points, 6 assists and 3 rebounds. Fans in the stands played a game of Where’s Wyllie as the league’s lumbering second leading scorer was limited to a two-point night. Five Ainley Group players scored in double digits, including big shooters Colin Jardine, Marty MacAllister and BJ Workman. For Rideau Realty, Rodney Smith-Merkley had 11 points and 9 rebounds. Having slipped below .500 with its 3-4 record, Rideau Realty will look to regroup for its game against Taylor Auto Mall in Week #8.

At long last, I humbly submit the Week #6 game summaries.

David slew Goliath in the first game of Week #6 action at St. Mary’s, as the fattest team in the league, the 1-4 Ainley Group, toppled the previously undefeated KDL Group 79-64. Sporting a new haircut and a determined look, Brad Speck, along with Matt Wyllie, led the way for the Ainley Group team. Speck posted 23 points, 5 rebounds and 12 assists, while Wyllie scored a game-high 29 points and added 11 boards and 3 assists in the win. The KDL Group team had a rare poor shooting performance from the field, but guard Jay Peak shot well from the floor, contributing 26 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists in a losing cause. In an entertaining display of lackadaisical defensive coverage, Ainley Group’s Matt Lundvall routinely left Ian Spear alone in his favourite shooting spot, 8-feet out from the basket, along the baseline. Spear added 10 points for KDL Group on 5-7 shooting. In a duel for poor shooting supremacy, Scott Delaney came out ahead of Ray Dickman, as Delaney misfired often to go 0-7, while Dickman could only manage to miss on each of his 5 attempts.

After KDL Group’s loss in the first game of the night at St. Mary’s, the league’s remaining undefeated team – Riverside Ford – was in tough against a hot ServiceMaster squad.  Riverside Ford played its first game since Captain, and top offensive threat, Tyler Bennett, went down with a leg injury in Week #5 action. Doctors suspect that Bennett’s leg had finally given out as a result of carrying his team all season long. ServiceMaster had a well-balanced attack with four players scoring in double-digits in the 70-46 victory.  Riverside Ford could not control the glass as they only pulled down 34 rebounds to ServiceMaster’s 56. Mother Nature clearly had money on Riverside Ford to win its sixth consecutive game, as she has wreaked havoc on Eastern Ontario ever since Tom Hoystead (1-9 shooting) and his teammates suffered their first loss of the season. Both teams sit atop the standings, along with KDL Group, with 5-1 records heading into Week #7.

The final game of the night at St. Mary’s saw Casco improve its record to 3-3 with its second consecutive win, narrowly defeating Boston Pizza 58-55. Casco’s Nick Briere pulled down almost half of his team’s rebounds, ending an impressive night with 19 rebounds, 15 points and 3 assists. Kirk Tyo dished for 7 assists and added 6 rebounds along with 15 points in the effort for Casco. Boston Pizza had another strong performance from Jamie Clarke, who posted 23 points, 11 rebounds and 3 assists. Clarke went 11-14 from the free-throw line, but could not get an important one to fall at the end of the game. With the dawning of the new year, we saw the return of the old Josh Parsons, who went 2-11 from behind the three-point arc. Despite having lost its past two games, Boston Pizza has been very competitive in both matches and will look to get back in the win column against a tough ServiceMaster team next game.

Kicking things off at TISS, Beattie Dodge earned its second win of the season in a tight game, edging Eastern Engineering 58-55, despite the fact that three of its players shot a collective 3-23. The trio of Mike Ayerst, Dan Preston and Scott Cruciger stepped up for their struggling Beattie Dodge teammates and scored 13, 16 and 16 points respectively. Scott Cruciger did nothing to improve Canadian-American relations, as the Ohio native earned two technical fouls, overshadowing an otherwise good night of 16 points, 11 rebounds and 3 assists. Brian Kloosterman posted 22 points along with 19 boards and 3 assists in the loss for the Eastern Engineering team that moves to a 3-3 record.

The middle game of the night, at TISS, saw the Rideau Realty boys easily handle Podium Sport Therapy, in a 68-49 victory. For Podium Sports Therapy, wily veteran guard, Dennis Dickson, put on a masterful shooting clinic for his young teammate, Taylor Publow. Dickson went 4-15 from the field, including 1-5 from 3-point land, while Publow could only manage to shoot 0-6 from behind the arc and 2-12 on the night. Atta-boy, Dennis! The Rideau Realty team did what they always do – made sound choices and limited their three-point barrage. Anyway, I’m a week late in typing this bloody thing; so cut me some slack.

Despite dominating the glass and shot attempts, Taylor Auto Mall could not overcome MINCOM Island City Realty, as it fell 79-68, in late game action at TISS. Geremiah Geldart ensured the announcement regarding his pending departure did not fall on deaf ears, as he posted a big night in Week #6 for Taylor Auto Mall. Geldart fired for 24 points, adding 6 rebounds and 3 assists in the loss. Four of his teammates, however, combined to shoot 7-35. One of those four players in that shameful-shooting group, may, or may not, be a sponsor, so we will not divulge his name at this time. In the win, Ray Pengelly scored a game-high 31 points and grabbed 11 boards, while Dave Burns added 23 and 11 rebounds, as well.
